Gippsland Lakes Fishing

Well we have just arrived back from a great break in the Gippsland Lakes, it was my first visit to the lakes since i was a kid so it was very interesting to see what we could catch with little local knowledge other then a few magazine articles.

We had no trouble finding plenty of Prawns, we tried anchoring near the entrance and catching them on their run out to sea and this worked well if a little boring. In the end we found the best method was wading the shallows with a dolphin torch. We found this easier than a "prawning light" as it was easier to follow the prawns when they jumped around etc. Prawning this way was amazing fun, if you're never done it before it is great fun give it a try. The Prawns are most active when the tide is running hard but you can nab a few all night long.

We also managed to get out through the notorious Lakes Entrance Bar without too many troubles (the weather was kind to us) and had a couple of great sessions on the Flathead & Gummies, one session we almost bagged out on both species in one drift. We got the most Flatties close the the shore (12 -1 18m of water) while the better Gummies seemed to be holding around the 18 - 20m mark - still within a short distance of the Bar.

Overall it was a great trip and we ate fresh seafood every day i recommend if you have a boat get down there just don't bother fishing within the lakes themselves at this time of year the Jetskis & hoons are just insane and make fishing hard and unpleasant. Melbourne Fishing

Wow what a great season we're having in Melbourne! The Snapper have been really biting lately as the weather heats up, it's a pity that the weather is not more stable wtill we have been getting out at any chance we get!

Hopefully from here Melbourne Fishing will jsut keep improving. The thing i love best about Melbourne fishing is that once the Snapper start biting the fishing just gets better and better as the water warms and more specise come on the bite.
